*New Group* Actor's Scene Forum
In the almost 5 years since I passed on the Drop In to other hands, I’ve done much in my acting career both on the acting and the teaching side. In that time, I’d recurred on Aliens in America, did the Museum Project, and booked some small principal roles, most notably on Human Target and Fringe. I’d also expanded my teaching repertoire during this period. I now run the business of producing the Mastery, I teach Linda Darlow’s 12 Choices Audition class, and completed a very successful run as a full time instructor for a local acting school, that has since changed hands and administration. Since leaving said acting school, I’d taken a long hard look at what I wanted to be up to in the community and the industry. And I recall how much fun and enjoyment I got out of producing the Drop In for the three and a half years I ran it. To that end, I’m starting a new group in the vein of the aforementioned Drop In, and I’m calling it the ACTOR’S SCENE FORUM. I missed the camaraderie. I missed the energy and the dynamic of playing that way in the community. And I don’t want to supplant what is currently in place, so I’m having it on a different night, and I’m going to charge $10 per person. Other details can be got by messaging me at sceneforum@henryjmah.com, or visiting the revamped website at www.sceneforum.henryjmah.com because I’m going to implement pre-registration as well, as I will be capping the number of actors reading to 20 per night. And the whole first come – first serve thing will eventually be brought back once I get things moving smoothly. The group will be held at Trevan Wong’s Studio in East Vancouver on going Wednesday nights, to give actors the opportunity to go to both groups if they so choose. I look forward to working this again. It’s been a long time and sorely missed, I think. I welcome the past participants and look forward to connecting with new comers too.
The Actor's Drop In - A Brief History
It was started September 2003. My mantra for the space was "it's not a class, it's a drop in". My mandate for the space was to give actors a place where they can come and explore their talents and network with other actors in our local community and play together in a non class environment. The drop in has become a sacred space for many local actors who attend regularly. It has become a space to experiment and try different things with different actors in a safe container. Actors were encouraged to bring scenes to try that is against their type, or bring a monologue or write a scene for themselves or someone else. The latter has become so successful that there is a vat full of original material from drop in actors that get read on a regular basis. My intention for the space was to create a forum for actors to meet other actors and industry professionals and work together to create projects outside the drop in. This too has been very successful, in that several short films and to date one feature film has been made with primarily drop in actors, and all this came out of being seen performing at the drop in space. There was also a director's night once a month, where local up and coming independent film directors can bring in a scene and work with our actors to hone their directing skills. There have even been some specialty workshops with high profile directors also working with our actors. Some of the directors we have worked with include Larry Kent, Carl Bessai and Nathaniel Geary. Overall my vision for the drop in space was that it be a meeting place for actors and industry professionals to get to know each other and work together in a supportive community, and I have accomplished that.
